good value for what it is September 9, 2010 Don C This netbook / laptop was purchased to fill a need at the time. It has more memory (2gig) then average netbook (1gig). It is doing what I need for now. Not the most powerful but I believe more power than the basic atom processor in the 10" netbooks. It does not have cd / dvd drive - ( I have purchased one) - but is very portable and is meeting my needs so far. The one issue that has not been taken into concideration yet is the "new" 64 bit operating system. There may be some issues and needs for new drivers to be used with some of my current equipment. (printers, etc)
Portable and Affordable! September 6, 2010 Andrew (Austin) I bought one of these through Amazon but had to return it because the touch pad (mouse pad) was clunky. I had to pound on it to get it to move. I tried to update the driver, but that wasn't it. Amazon scheduled the UPS pick up and delivered another device at the same speed as my initial shipping. I had initially set up next day shipping and the replacement item also came in one day. I just swapped boxes with the UPS guy. So for the record, good job Amazon on hassle-free returns. I did find it interesting that I got the first one via Fedex but replacement via UPS. Whatever, it was all good.
This notebook is a nice little companion to a more powerful desktop or laptop. Windows 7 makes it easy to network and transfer files, find your printers, install the needed drivers for your usb devices, and works better than Vista. It does not have an optical disk drive, but I bought one for under $30 on ebay. I just plugged it in and Windows installed the driver and presto, I now had a dvd burner. I didn't need additional software to play DVDs.
The processor isn't lightning fast. I notice a lot more lag time than on my amped up 2 year old Inspirion 1420, my upgraded 4 year old desktop or my new Latitude. However, you get what you pay for. I wanted a small, cheap and ultra light device that would allow me to transfer stuff and work on the fly with work docs, power point, and especially my new Echo pen (a must have). This device is perfect for that. It's got pretty decent sound quality. The keyboard is almost standard size, but might take a little bit of getting used to. The battery life is really good. I've gotten close to 7 hours of usage with it. I like that the battery makes the unit sit at an elevated angle, so it's easier on the wrists and keeps the system cooler. Not sure if everyone will appreciate that, but I do!
It comes with an HDMI port, so once you've got your DVD drive, you can easily watch on your big screen. Since DVD players with an HDMI port are a dime a dozen, I don't think this should be a deciding factor in the purchase.
I've got a direcTv subscription and it's connected to my home network. I can watch that dvr programming on this computer, except that for the first 10 minutes or so, the picture is very jumpy. After that, it's fine. That doesn't happen on my other home pc's. But then again my other processors are much quicker and dual core.
This notebook doesn't come bloated with too much software, but it does have a 6 month antivirus (mcafee) subscription. A trial version of MS Office is also included. I haven't used it yet, but it seems that if you do not purchase it, you'll still be able to use MS Word. You can also get Open Office for free (donations accepted) and that works fine. I've installed an IDE (eclipse) and have been working on some simple Java programming and so far so good. This unit doesn't overheat and has a sturdier feel than I had expected. The screen only tilts to about 120 degrees. For the record, the Inspirion and Latitude both tilt to about 150 degrees or so.
The only real draw back is that darn touch pad. Dell tried to make improvements on it by allowing you to zoom in or out and use it similar to an ipod's click wheel. So care needs to be taken because if you happen to touch it just the wrong way, you'll zoom right in or out of your project or do some other weird thing with it. So I'm not too impressed with that aspect of it. Otherwise, this is a nice buy for what it is. For me, it's a nice, portable, good looking companion. Weighing in at about 3 pounds is a huge plus. It is a very thin notebook, but as I mentioned, the battery is positioned in such a way that it will add an extra inch to the height.
I've seen more powerful laptops in slightly higher price range, but they're twice the weight, bigger and bulkier. So if you need economy performance, you should look at the lower end models from Acer, Lenovo or Emachine- considering those generally come with dvd drives. For portability, this is great!

Great laptop. Should correct the description, it says it has a celeron dual core by default, but it really doesn't
Memory upgrade August 16, 2010 mlisboa 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This laptop works fine. But I tried to do a memory upgrade (adding more 2 Gb) and this was a nigthmare. There is not an easy access to it and to do so, you have to dismout the whole computer, in an operation that is very difficult. So, neither upgade is possible to do in this laptop without great knowleadge about laptop's maintenance and professional support. To see how this operation is difficult, you can see in youtube the memory upgrade on dell mini 10v that is the same way [...]
You Get What You Pay For August 7, 2010 JBT Watcher (Dallas TX) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This PC is great if you want something inexpensive, lightweight, smaller, and mostly need to do web or browser based applications. It runs Windows 7, fast and smoothly. It comes with an MS Office trial ready to be licensed, by I opted to get [...] Office Suite which is free (asking donations) on the web. It works similarly to office, and any MS document can be imported or exported back to MS format quickly and easily.
If you have a decent internet download speed/rate, and a USB stick, there really is no need for a DVD/CD drive anymore. Anything you want to load on your PC can be downloaded or transferred, so I don't miss having the DVD drive at all.
I think this PC was a great buy. If you don't need a machine capable of designing the next generation space shuttle, then this might be the PC for you.
